From Brian Kiernan
Dear Do-It-Yourselfer,
Installing crown molding can be one of the most frustrating projects a do-it-yourselfer can take on, and a good trim carpenter will cost you $50 per hour on average plus material. Many homeowners take on this project only to be left with hundreds of dollars of scrap wood.
It seems very simple until you take a look at one of these miter and bevel charts used for cutting crown molding that you can get online. You could go cross-eyed trying to make sense of these. You need proper technique in cutting crown molding to gain excellent results.
There has been a lot of crown molding wasted on poor technique and not just by beginners. Very quickly you can become overwhelmed and agitated by the time and money you are wasting.
Besides just cutting your crown molding correctly you need to properly install it to your wall and ceiling. How would you nail it to the ceiling if the joists are running parallel with the crown molding?
Your crown molding needs to be fastened properly or it will move and large gaps will form in the corners and along the wall and ceiling.
Installing crown molding can be a tremendously mind-numbing, time consuming, expensive project. But it doesn’t have to be.
I have had my own trim carpentry business for the past 15 years and have taught many new employees how to cut and install crown molding properly.
In the past I have had to come in and fix crown molding projects gone wrong many times. Costing clients 3 or even 4 times what it would have been had they been able to complete it themselves.
Anyone can install crown molding quickly and easily with the right guidance.
Sincerely,
Brian Kiernan
